Keeping Your Home Safe

We installed a home security system this week.

The number of burglaries are up in our county and with the holidays coming up we decided it was time to make the investment. So far, it's worked well and we haven't set it off yet accidentally. Besides a security system, there are other things you can do to keep your home safe.

Invest in a small fireproof safe. Most home improvement stores sell safes in all sizes and price ranges. Unless you're Liz Taylor, you don't need a huge one to lock up your jewelry or other small valuables. Check books, social security cards and any other document with important information on it should all be kept in a secure place as well.

Don't keep your valuables in the bedroom. The master bedroom is the first place theives go because that's where the jewelry, cash, and medicines tend to be. Fool them! Stash your stuff somewhere else.

Keep a well lit outside area. Upgrade your outdoor lighting to motion sensitive lights.

Secure your garage. If you have a garage door clicker in your vehicle, make sure you keep your vehicle locked. A neighbor was robbed while she slept by theives who accessed her garage by using the clicker in her unmarked car. They COULD have come into the house where she was but luckily chose to loot the garage instead.

Don't stack Christmas gifts in front of a window. It's just too tempting.

I'm not trying to scare you to death here. And obviously, you could do all of these things and still get hit. But there is a little peace of mind in knowing you are as prepared as possible.
