Paul Newman Cake

I was sad to find out that Paul Newman passed away yesterday at 83. Besides being an actor, he was a philanthropist who gave away more money that most of us can ever dream of, a championship winning race team owner, a race car driver and the producer of some fine food products. And he wasn't bad looking either.

A few years ago my former boss brought in a wonderful cake that she called Paul Newman Cake. She had acquired the recipe from her sister in law and was happy to share with us. I was told later that the cake is known in most circles as Better Than Sex Cake. The legend has it that since Better Than Sex Cake didn't sound very wholesome for church picnics or PTA bake sales, the name was changed to Better Than Paul Newman cake which eventually became Paul Newman cake. I have made this several times and it is a favorite.

Paul Newman Cake
Ingredients:
1 box German chocolate cake mix
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 jar butterscotch or caramel topping
1 (12 oz.) container Cool Whip
4 Heath bars, crushed

Directions:

Bake cake as directed in 9 x 13 inch pan. While cake is still hot, poke holes to the bottom of the pan with handle of wooden spoon or straw. Pour milk over the top and let soak in for a few minutes. Then pour caramel topping over the cake. Let cool completely. Spread Cool Whip over cake and sprinkle crushed Heath bars over Cool Whip. Keep chilled until ready to serve.
